Hello and welcome to the homepage of Dr Edmund Hunt, a scientist at Bristol University, UK. I am interested in the challenge of how to achieve emergence (‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’) in engineered systems. Can we use the simple behavioural rules discovered by nature, through the evolutionary process, to guide swarms of robots to solve tasks such as exploration or farming? I hope to find out through my interdisciplinary research.

Previously I have studied human collective behaviour in economics and finance, and biological collective behaviour in ant colonies (Temnothorax) and social spiders (Stegodyphus). Evolution has been very successful in creating swarms of individuals to solve problems at the group level (e.g. decision-making, collective predation).
